Setting Off From Rethymno: The Start of My Adventure

Alright, so the day started in Rethymno, a captivating coastal town, just beaming with Venetian charm. My pick-up was early, which, honestly, is that little bit tough on vacation, but the prospect of exploring Knossos kept me motivated. The drive, very, very scenic, winding through those rugged mountains and picturesque villages, already began to give me a sense of Crete’s diverse beauty. I noticed that there were a few different tour operators that provide this trip, so it is probably a solid idea to do a little bit of homework and comparison to find the one that works best for what you want.

My tour, more or less, included transportation in an air-conditioned bus (pretty key in the Cretan heat!), a tour guide, and entrance fees to Knossos Palace. Some tours also tack on lunch, which is something you could consider too, or it could be something that’s offered on the tour already.

Knossos Palace: Stepping Back in Time

Knossos Palace, seemingly, was the definite highlight of the day. That is where I mean, it’s just incredible. Walking through those ancient ruins, you actually can not help but feel a connection to the Minoan civilization, which thrived here thousands of years ago. Our tour guide, honestly, was incredibly knowledgeable, and brought those stories of King Minos, the Minotaur, and that labyrinth to life.

That palace, more or less, is vast, and you definitely will want a guide to truly appreciate its importance. The vibrant frescoes, that is, the reconstructed sections, and those sheer scale of the palace were seriously impressive. Just wandering through those courtyards and corridors, you do get a good sense of how advanced and sophisticated that Minoan culture must have been.

It could be quite hot under the Cretan sun, actually, so do remember to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. You probably should also wear comfortable shoes, too, because you would want to do a fair bit of walking over uneven ground, so there’s that.

Heraklion City: A Blend of Old and New

After Knossos, we travelled to Heraklion, which is that capital city of Crete. To be honest, it offered a complete contrast to the ancient ruins of Knossos, that is because, in a way, it’s very a modern, busy city. Heraklion, still, is soaked in history, too, because of its Venetian past.

Our tour included a short guided walk past some important landmarks, just such as the Venetian Loggia and that Lion Square. You then get free time to explore the city on your own, very likely, to shop, or grab lunch.

I took that chance to visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, considered to be one of those best museums in Greece. That museum is filled to the brim with Minoan artifacts, many which were unearthed at Knossos, which offered a much more in-depth glimpse into that civilization. It is possible you would prefer to just explore those shops and cafes, but for history lovers, so to speak, the museum is absolutely worth a visit.

What Could Be Better

The day trip, it’s almost, felt a little rushed. Knossos Palace needs time to properly take in its history. Giving an extra hour there might allow that time to truly roam, capturing the ancient setting in mind.

The free time that was allocated to Heraklion seemed brief to take in this big city and truly see everything, more or less. Longer to experience that cultural places or dine may elevate what anyone might want from that destination.

Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?

Basically, was that Rethymno to Knossos and Heraklion day trip worth it? I think it actually depends on what you want from your vacation. If you have an interest in history and archaeology, actually, then Knossos Palace alone probably makes it worth the journey. Combining that with a visit to Heraklion also offers a pretty nice mix of ancient history and contemporary city life.

But, if you prefer to travel at a slower rate or hate big crowds, it might be a better idea to visit these sites separately, or maybe just choose one over the other. You probably can also rent a car and explore them on your own, very, very giving you better control over your time and schedule.

In a way, the day trip is a really good introduction to Crete’s history and culture. But that being said, just don’t expect an extremely in-depth exploration of either site. Instead, just treat it as a teaser, that might inspire you to return and explore that island further in the future.

So, to put it differently, plan accordingly. Think what your end goals of seeing Crete will be, that being said, this will ensure it falls in line to your time and trip constraints.
