Why Namsan at Night?

Why even bother to do this at night, might you wonder? Well, Seoul really shines at night – like your friend after a make-over – and Namsan offers a viewpoint that’s almost unmatched. The city lights stretch out as far as you can see, it’s basically giving you an incredible sense of just how expansive Seoul happens to be. Too it’s more comfortable in the warmer months. I mean hiking when it is not super hot and when there are fewer crowds is always great. The trails have lights, of course, that makes the climb a bit safer, yet there’s something uniquely exciting about being in nature so close to a major city at night, right?

Getting There: Trailheads and Transportation

Getting to the trails? Very, very easy. There are a bunch of ways to make your way up Namsan, and that includes different trails from just a few different starting points. If you happen to be near Myeongdong, that’s usually where it makes sense to begin, like when you’re close to home already. Plus, you’ve got options such as the Namsan Cable Car, too it that shaves off some of the uphill climb; still, what’s the fun in skipping the exercise? What’s great about picking different starting points is that you actually see more of the park, and you’re probably going to stumble on things you would have not otherwise. The Namsan Oreumi is another option. This incline elevator is free.

Hidden Gems on Namsan: Beyond the Tower

Okay, you probably know the N Seoul Tower is where everyone wants to go, and frankly it’s tough to miss. Still, Namsan has more interesting things to see than just that big landmark, honestly. As you’re making your way up (or down), keep an eye out for these less traveled to spots. What makes a good recommendation better? A little story of course!

The Fortress Walls

The Fortress Walls encircle the peak, that in some stretches are original, and are honestly super awesome reminders that this spot has important history. Seeing a fortress like that is very cool, it causes your imagination to go places as you’re getting in your exercise. Take a pause just a little, will you? Check out all of those old stones as they almost glow under the trail lights. If you’re the type to consider things from way back, you might appreciate thinking about all the guarding this wall has done over time, what it’s seen, too, over the centuries.

봉수대 (Beacon Fire Station Site)

There are so many interesting places to explore. That station was basically how they would shoot smoke signals back in the day to deliver some very, very important messages across distances. It shows how important Namsan was when it came to talking to people and getting stuff done during old times. There might be, more or less, something that stands out about checking out a place where crucial communication went down, that makes the hike all the more thoughtful, clearly?

Namsan Park’s Traditional Garden

Need to unwind and admire some landscaping? That location right there is a beautiful, serene spot showcasing Korean landscaping and its architectural aesthetics. You’re able to explore typical ponds, pavilions, and plants that deliver insight into conventional landscaping practices. A cool place to reflect.

Love Locks and Photo Spots (with a twist)

Yeah, so you probably know about the love locks, that, really, have taken over sections of the tower area. But, look a little closer and you’ll find spots that don’t have tons of locks yet that offer some awesome views. I mean there might be some cool backdrops away from all that metal, if you walk a little. So find a less busy spot that still has that charm yet with way less of a crowd to make for a memory that probably doesn’t seem cookie-cutter.

Tips for a Great Night Hike

Before you just dash out into the night there’s just a bit to think about so that you’re okay, very, very safe and having a fun time. Like you might take with you on any outdoor jaunt, basically.

  • Wear decent shoes: Really and truly, you might like to be as comfortable as possible for the trail. Hiking shoes are cool; yet running shoes, they’re great too. Leave the sandals for the hotel, basically.
  • Bring a flashlight or use your phone: Even though trails have some light sources it’s still pretty alright smart to see to it that you’ve got a little something extra.
  • Snacks and water: It is not some marathon, yet you’ll need fuel to avoid energy depletion. It is also a super place to chillax and view the scenery so enjoy!

Is a Night Hike on Namsan Mountain Worth It?

Should you find the time to do it? Positively. Seriously, beyond what people usually see, Namsan has just a ton more that might make your travel memories way more memorable, for sure. Plus, there is nothing that feels similar to experiencing a busy place from up high as you’re quietly challenging yourself to ascend. Okay, do the touristy thing. Absolutely see the tower. Also?
